    Very informative, with many helpful suggestions. Thank you for all the work you put into this video. Especially taking the extra effort to label your work. Why don’t you put your palette pic on the inside of the cover with the mixing tray set over it. Then you can remove the tray and use it while still seeing the palette pic.

    I am wondering, when do you use colors such as sap green if you mix your own greens ? I often see artists who indeed prefer to mix their own greens, but in what situation would you rather use the green pigments that are offered on the market, weither it be sap green, or hooker's, or any other ? And the same question would apply to any secondary or tertiary color… since you can mix nice purples, when do you need those ready to use purples ?

    • @lorrainewatry_watercolors
      @lorrainewatry_watercolors 29 днів тому

      Hi Helen. Thanks for the question. I don't have a perfect answer. I like to mix a lot of my greens because I can get a more realistic green or closer to what I am seeing in the image. I will use premixed greens (convenience colors) if I feel the green matches my green paint. I will also use premixed greens in a mix with other colors, green & blue, green & yellow, sometimes green and a red for a more neutral green mix. I hope that helps. It's the same for other colors. I guess it also depends on how much room you have on your palette. I know some artists always mix their secondary and tertiary colors. I do a little bit of both.

      @@lorrainewatry_watercolors thank you for your answer. I guess it is trial and error. I see artists who suggest to use only a few colors, and others that do not hesitate to use a great variety in the same painting. Some that mix colors on the paper, while others mix them on their palette. And some that do very realistic paintings, while others do very loose and expressionist ones. I guess I am still figuring out my way of doing things.

    • @lorrainewatry_watercolors

      You can use a rubber cement pick up tool. It looks like a rubbery eraser. They are usually sold by the masking fluid. You can also use your fingers to sort of roll the edge of the mask and then lift it off the paper at an angle. I have also used masking tape to touch the mask and then lift it off the paper.

    Watching this looking for alternatives to masking fluid. I’ve been working on a very intricate dragon painting for several weeks-took several days to mask the dragon, using small brushes, even a glass pen, to mask the details and I finished the background a few days ago, wiped the masking fluid off and despite what I THOUGHT were almost perfect masking of small areas & details…it’s a mess…a large, almost shapeless white blob with occasional small dots of the background right in the middle of the dragons body and tail. SO frustrated! I’m still going to TRY and lift what I can and use more opaque colors than I’d originally planned (luckily, not hard with yellows, orange & red), but still worried I won’t get the definition and look I was going for. I’m planning on trying another one either with just negative painting or using tape..

    Beautiful painting of a glass bird. You are an excellent artist and excellent teacher. I can see why you were chosen to be president of the National Watercolor Society. You represent the best combination of skills in this medium. I was fascinated how you positioned your glass object on a gameboard inorder to make the glass object more interesting. I can see why painting glass is so challenging... you are not painting the glass... but the reflections in the glass. I also learn so much about design and process from your videos. For example, lowering the chroma of the highlights to give more focus to the bird as a whole. Thank you!

    I purchased the DS primary and secondary sets along with the Moonglow, not knowing the LF ratings. Will it still go fugitive when mixed for shading or neutral tints? The granulation was the motive for buying it. Can some other color like indigo be added to reenforce the strength of the Moongone? (lol) Nice tutorial video. Signed, Grey-matters
